Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht addressed Baker Mayfield’s recent public comments about his contract situation on Thursday. While the quarterback admitted he felt disrespected during negotiations, Licht struck a measured tone and emphasized the organization’s confidence in its franchise signal-caller.
The two sides were unable to reach an agreement before training camp. As a result, Mayfield is set to play the 2026 season under the final year of his current contract.
Licht Calls Mayfield a Franchise Quarterback
Licht acknowledged that Mayfield wears his emotions on his sleeve. He also stressed that the Buccaneers remain committed to the veteran quarterback despite the recent public disagreement.
“Baker, as we all know here, is a very fiery competitor who’s not afraid to speak his mind,” Licht said, via Greg Auman of FOX Sports. “I’m sure he’s disappointed, frustrated; we were too. We’re in a good place. He’s focused on having the best year of his career.”
Licht’s comments echoed the organization’s earlier stance that it still views Mayfield as its long-term answer at quarterback. He made it clear the relationship remains intact despite the failed negotiations.
Mayfield Didn’t Hide His Frustration
Mayfield generated headlines after revealing his disappointment with the Buccaneers’ contract offer. He said he felt disrespected during the negotiating process after the two sides failed to reach common ground.
The veteran quarterback is entering the final season of the three-year, $100 million contract he signed in 2023. He also suggested Tampa Bay was unwilling to meet the $50 million annual salary he was seeking.
Focus Shifts to the 2026 Season
Despite Licht’s public support, reports indicated the Buccaneers were unhappy with Mayfield’s decision to discuss the negotiations publicly. Even so, there appears to be little concern that the situation will become a distraction inside the building.
With contract talks now on hold, both sides will turn their attention to the upcoming season. Mayfield has the opportunity to strengthen his value even further before free agency arrives in 2027.
