Former Buccaneers’ Quarterback Kyle Trask could be getting another opportunity in the NFC South, this time with the Carolina Panthers.
The Buccaneers moved on from Trask last year after four seasons with the organization. Now, he could return to the division and potentially become Tampa Bay’s opponent.
Kyle Trask Heading to the Panthers
The Panthers are reportedly preparing to add Trask after Haynes King suffered a hamstring injury.
“The Panthers are expected to add former Bucs QB Kyle Trask following Haynes King’s hamstring injury, per a league source,” Panthers reporter Mike Kaye reported.
“Trask worked under Dave Canales in Tampa Bay in 2023. He also worked out for the team last week. A corresponding move will be needed.”
Trask worked out for Carolina’s coaching staff on July 29. The potential move would give him another opportunity to establish himself in the NFL.
The 6-foot-5, 236-pound quarterback entered the NFL as Tampa Bay’s second-round pick in 2021. The Buccaneers selected him No. 64 overall after his standout career at Florida.
Trask Has Plenty of NFC South Experience
Trask spent four seasons in Tampa Bay while backing up Tom Brady and Baker Mayfield. He remained with the organization until the Buccaneers released him during final roster cuts in August 2025.
Trask later joined the Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad in November. A move to Carolina would give him another opportunity within the NFC South.
“Trask gets another shot with his third NFC South team,” via Fox Sports NFL reporter Greg Auman.
That experience could make Trask a logical addition for Carolina. He already knows the division and has familiarity with the Panthers’ coaching staff.
Dave Canales Could Help Trask’s Transition
Trask worked with Dave Canales during the 2023 season in Tampa Bay. Canales was the Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator that season before eventually becoming Carolina’s head coach.
That familiarity could benefit Trask if Carolina officially brings him aboard. He would not be learning an entirely unfamiliar offensive system or coaching philosophy.
The Panthers also have a recent history with Tampa Bay that makes this move more interesting. Carolina ended the Buccaneers’ four-year run as NFC South champions in 2025.
Buccaneers Have Already Moved On
Tampa Bay’s quarterback room looks considerably different from the one Trask occupied during his four seasons.
Jake Browning currently sits behind Baker Mayfield as the Buccaneers’ QB2. Connor Bazelak and undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels are competing for the third quarterback position.
For Trask, Carolina could represent another chance to prove he belongs on an NFL roster. For Tampa Bay, his potential return to the division creates another interesting storyline.
The former Buccaneers draft pick may now have an opportunity to contribute for the team that dethroned Tampa Bay last season.
