The Tampa Bay Buccaneers pass rush hasn’t been very good the past few seasons. Definitely a far cry from the defense that won the Super Bowl five years ago. Especially on the defensive line.
That group famously shut down Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. However, several players from that championship defense remain in Tampa Bay.
The current defense believes it can eventually reach that same level. One major difference is the depth Tampa Bay now has along its defensive front.
Tampa Bay Has Added More Pass-Rush Options
Yaya Diaby recorded seven sacks last season, while Vita Vea finished with 4.5 sacks. A linebacker ranked third on the team, while no other front-four player exceeded three sacks.
That lack of consistent pressure created a major problem for the Buccaneers. This year’s defensive line and edge group should provide significantly more opportunities.
Tampa Bay added veterans A’Shawn Robinson and Rakeem Nunez-Roches to strengthen the interior. Both players also bring proven pass-rushing ability to the defensive front.
Nunez-Roches recorded three sacks last season. Robinson has produced eight sacks over the past two seasons.
Those numbers might not immediately jump off the page. However, adding multiple capable pass rushers could prevent opposing offenses from focusing on Tampa Bay’s top threats.
Rueben Bain Jr. Could Change the Equation
The Buccaneers also selected Miami edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr. with the No. 15 overall pick.
Tampa Bay expects the rookie to make an immediate impact. His versatility and motor could give the defense another disruptive presence off the edge.
The Buccaneers also signed Al-Quadin Muhammad after his time with the Detroit Lions. Muhammad is coming off a career-best season in sacks.
Meanwhile, second-year edge rusher David Walker appears ready for the season aftet suffering an injury his rookie year. Walker has generated significant buzz during training camp with his production and consistent pressure.
The Buccaneers Need Their Depth to Translate
Tampa Bay now has considerably more potential sources of pressure than it did last season.
Diaby and Calijah Kancey remain important pieces of the defensive front. And hopefully Vita Vea. Bain, Walker, Muhammad, Robinson and Nunez-Roches give Tampa Bay additional options.
The Buccaneers do not need every player to become a double-digit sack threat. They simply need more players capable of winning consistently.
If that happens, Tampa Bay’s pass rush could look dramatically different in 2026. That would give the entire defense a better chance to resemble the championship unit it hopes to become.
