The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ defense delivered an early sequence that helped establish the tone for the preseason game against the New York Jets. The Buccaneers went on to beat the Jets 24-16 due in part to Garnes pick-six.
Undrafted rookie Ayden Garnes was at the center of that production. The Arizona product finished with three tackles, a pick-six, a tackle for loss, and a pass breakup.
His interception return for a touchdown particularly stood out. It provided a strong example of why Garnes has generated positive reports throughout Buccaneers training camp.
Garnes Gives the Buccaneers Another Option
Garnes entered the offseason without much attention surrounding his arrival in Tampa Bay. His performance against the Jets showed why undrafted players can become valuable finds.
The Buccaneers have found undrafted players who provide more than simple depth. Some have shown they can step into opportunities and make meaningful contributions.
That could be especially important with questions surrounding the Buccaneers’ cornerback depth. Garnes gave the team plenty to consider with his performance.
Garnes Builds on His Training Camp Momentum
Training camp performances don’t always translate once the regular season begins. Players can look impressive during camp before struggling when the competition changes.
Still, Garnes backed up the positive reports surrounding him. He stayed tight in coverage, made plays, and showed sound tackling throughout the night.
It’s only one preseason performance, but the Buccaneers have another reason to watch Garnes closely.
