The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will see Baker Mayfield take the field during their preseason matchup against the Chiefs.
According to ESPN’s Jenna Laine, head coach Todd Bowles confirmed Mayfield will play this week.
“Bucs coach Todd Bowles said quarterback Baker Mayfield will play this week against the Chiefs. That’s a deviation from last year, when he did not see any preseason action.”
Mayfield did not play during the Buccaneers’ preseason last year.
That will change this week, with Tampa Bay’s starting quarterback expected to see preseason action against Kansas City.
Baker Mayfield Will See Preseason Action
The decision gives Mayfield an opportunity to get on the field before the regular season arrives.
It also marks a change from Tampa Bay’s approach with Mayfield during last year’s preseason schedule.
The Buccaneers have already played one preseason game this year. Mayfield did not play in that matchup against the New York Jets.
Now, Mayfield is expected to get his first preseason action against Kansas City. His appearance will give Tampa Bay another opportunity to evaluate its offense before the regular season.
For Mayfield, it will also provide a chance to get some live-game reps before the Buccaneers begin their regular-season schedule.
Bowles’ decision represents a notable change from last year’s approach. The Buccaneers clearly have a different plan for their starting quarterback this preseason.
