On Wednesday evening, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers got some long awaited good news. It was reported by multiple sources that the team had reached an agreement with veteran nose tackle Vita Vea. This deal now puts an end to his training camp hold in as well as his trade request.
The Bucs gave Vea a one year extension which included $30 million of new money. This included $6 million added to the current year and $24 million in the 2027 season. The deal is fully guaranteed.
Never A Doubt
It was made clear from the start that the Bucs had no intention of trading Vea. General manager Jason Licht said as much in a press conference. Regardless, rumors flew in the face of Vea’s trade request after failing to reach a contract extension. Many sports outlets were critical of the Bucs inability to get this deal done.
Now all that outside noise can end.
This whole situation could have turned out very differently. Between the training camp hold in and the trade request and weighing what to do with an aging nose tackle there was not an easy decision to come to. However, Jason Licht managed the Vita Vea situation perfectly.
In The Beginning
This all started with Vea wanting an extension going into the final year of his contract. For eight seasons, he had been the anchor of the Bucs defense. Vea helped lead the team to multiple division championships as well as a Super Bowl victory.
Make no mistake, this is one of the best players in franchise history. What he brings as a run defender is nothing short of legendary having led the Bucs to six top five run defenses in his eight year career. It is only a matter of time until he is enshrined in the team’s ring of honor.
However, father time is undefeated. And for a player who has spent his career around 350 pounds it is unclear how well he will age as he gets into his early 30s. It is understandable why Licht was hesitant to give Vea the long-term extension he was looking for.
This led to the hold in situation. Although Vea has been listed with a back injury that has kept him out of training camp, it is widely believed that he has chosen to sit out due to his contract situation. The injury feels like just a mask so the team wasn’t forced to fine Vea for not participating.
This decision in itself played a role in the Bucs retaining their star tackle. While some teams may have strong-armed a player to force them to practice, Licht and the Buccaneers staff showed him grace. This bought good will and kept the lines of communication open as the two sides continued to negotiate.
Darkest Before The Dawn
Despite this things continued to look bleak as Vea requested a trade from the team. Although he wanted to stay in Tampa, he also wanted some security going into the year. If the Bucs wouldn’t give him his contract, then he requested to go to another team that would.
Again, Licht handled the situation with grace. There was no outrage and no bad blood. Licht was nothing but complementary of Vea and stood firm on the fact that the team had no intent to trade him despite other teams calling and making offers.
They sent a clear message. The Bucs value and respect Vea and they want him with the team. This validation continued to buy good will and keep the lines of communication open.
With this came continuous negotiations. Finally, the two sides reached an agreement with a pay bump, and a one year extension. This gave Vea the security in Tampa he was looking for and allowed the Bucs to continue to monitor his level of play as he approaches the twilight years of his career.
There was no holding out of regular season games. No snap trade following the request. No disgruntled players in the locker room. Just two parties with mutual respect working towards a common goal.
Threading The Needle
This was a difficult needle to thread. However, through a sensible people centered approach Licht got it done. A win-win agreement that keeps Vea happy and the Buccaneers defensive line a force to be reckoned with for the coming years.
