Vita Vea finally addressed the media following his new contract agreement with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The veteran nose tackle signed a one-year, $30 million extension with Tampa Bay. That agreement followed a contentious process that included Vea publicly requesting a trade.
Despite the drama surrounding his contract, Vea also discussed his excitement about his defensive teammates. Rookie outside linebacker Rueben Bain received particularly high praise from the veteran.
Vea Has High Praise for Bain
Vea’s comments showed how quickly Bain has impressed his veteran teammates. The rookie has already established himself as someone Vea believes can become special.
“Shoot, Rueben is a complete pro. You just see it day in and day out. I think there’s videos of him [where] you see him out there by himself, but he does a lot more behind the scenes when nobody is around,” Vea stated.
Vea specifically pointed to Bain’s work away from the spotlight. That commitment has apparently been noticeable since Bain arrived in Tampa Bay.
Bain’s Approach Has Stood Out
Vea continued explaining why Bain’s approach has caught his attention. He also highlighted the rookie’s football knowledge and determination.
“Just seeing how he carries himself, you don’t really see that in a bunch of young guys, so just seeing the hunger and determination in his eyes, it’s good to have on your side,” Vea stated. “He already knows so much of the game, so just talking to him about football, that’s the least of my worries about him. I feel like he has so much upside, and we’re glad to have him. I feel like everybody who passed up on him in the draft made a mistake.”
That is a strong endorsement from one of Tampa Bay’s most experienced defensive players. Vea clearly believes Bain has the talent and mindset to make an immediate impact.
Bain Making His Presence Felt
Bain has continued making a strong impression since the Buccaneers selected him 15th overall in April. His early approach has extended beyond his work on the practice field.
He has embraced the community while working to learn Tampa Bay’s defense. Bain has also regularly put in extra work after practice.
That commitment has been visible during training camp. It has also helped Bain begin making an impression on his teammates.
A Potential Defensive Leader
Bain’s personality is not necessarily built around being the loudest player in the room. However, his commitment could eventually make him an important leader.
His willingness to lead through his preparation fits the qualities Vea praised. The rookie has already shown a strong desire to improve.
The Buccaneers revamped their defense during the offseason. Improving the defensive line remained a major focus while increasing physicality across the defense.
Bain Fits Tampa Bay’s Defensive Vision
Bain appears to fit the defensive identity Tampa Bay wanted to establish. His physical style and commitment could make him an important part of that transformation.
The Buccaneers will need their defensive additions to translate into results during the 2026 season. Bain could have an opportunity to become one of the defense’s most important young players.
If he can carry his practice performance into games, Bain’s potential could become even more apparent. His first NFL preseason action will provide another opportunity to see his development.
