Jack Pyburn finds himself caught between two football paths, with neither one completely settled.
After the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ first preseason game, the rookie edge rusher acknowledged the uncertainty. Pyburn does not know when he might have to choose between Tampa Bay and another season of college football.
For now, his focus remains straightforward. Pyburn is concentrating on earning a spot with the Buccaneers.
The uncertainty stems from a major legal development involving the NCAA. Pyburn is among 16 players granted a temporary restraining order against the organization.
That ruling could give him a fifth season of college eligibility for 2026-27. Pyburn previously believed his college career had officially ended.
The former Florida and LSU standout completed his final season in Baton Rouge. He then went through the Senior Bowl and NFL Draft process before signing with Tampa Bay.
A Louisiana judge’s ruling reopened the possibility of another college season. The temporary restraining order also allows Pyburn to enter the transfer portal.
His agent’s phone reportedly received interest from college programs. Miami was also mentioned as a potential destination.
Pyburn Has Already Made His Case in Tampa Bay
The timing makes Pyburn’s situation even more unusual. He has already shown flashes during his first opportunities against NFL competition.
The 22-year-old signed a three-year, $3.1 million contract with $115,000 guaranteed. He then immediately made an impression during his preseason debut against the New York Jets.
Pyburn recorded two sacks in that game. His performance came in front of Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles.
That showing strengthened his case for a roster opportunity. At minimum, Pyburn appeared to put himself in consideration for the practice squad.
Now, however, the timeline surrounding his future remains unclear. The NCAA can challenge the extended injunction and pursue an appeal.
A hearing is expected toward the end of August. That timing could coincide with Tampa Bay’s final roster decisions.
NFL teams must reduce their rosters to 53 players by the end of August. Pyburn’s college opportunity could therefore change around the same time.
Pyburn’s Focus Remains on the Buccaneers
For now, Pyburn is stuck between two potential football futures. One path could keep him in Tampa Bay as he pursues an NFL roster spot.
The other could send him back to college for another season. However, the legal process will help determine whether that opportunity remains available.
Pyburn cannot control how the courts ultimately resolve the situation. He can control how he performs while competing for the Buccaneers.
For now, that’s exactly where his attention remains. Pyburn is competing for a job in Tampa Bay while letting the legal process determine what comes next.
