The Buccaneers defense didn’t dominate the Chiefs the way it did against the Jets. Still, Tampa Bay’s performance produced several encouraging moments worth discussing.
Tampa Bay’s first-team defense stopped Kansas City on its opening two possessions. Rueben Bain and Yaya Diaby helped lead that early defensive effort. Anthony Nelson then emerged as the unit’s biggest difference-maker with several timely plays.
Nelson finished with 1.5 sacks, including a strip sack of Chiefs quarterback Justin Fields during the first quarter. Later, Fields escaped the pocket before Mohamed Kamara and Nelson combined to bring him down.
The biggest defensive play arrived in the fourth quarter with Tampa Bay trailing 15-10. Cornerback Roman Parodie intercepted a bobbled pass and gave the Buccaneers a chance to take control.
Parodie showed strong awareness on the play, recognizing where the help was and diagnosing the developing situation. Tampa Bay’s defense then held firm during Kansas City’s next possession.
The Buccaneers never surrendered the lead after that point. David Walker also delivered a solid performance during his brief appearance, adding another positive takeaway from the defensive effort.
