The Tampa Bay Buccaneers believed they landed a potential difference-maker when they selected Miami edge rusher Rueben Bain 15th overall in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Bain’s shorter arm length caused some teams to pass on him. Tampa Bay wasn’t concerned about that limitation and believed it found tremendous value with the selection.
Rueben Bain Is Already Turning Heads
It’s still the preseason, and Bain has only seen limited action so far. However, his early performances have given the Buccaneers plenty of reason for optimism.
Bain has consistently looked strong throughout training camp. He also impressed during joint practices against the New York Jets.
Bain didn’t play in the preseason matchup against New York. His first preseason opportunity came against the Kansas City Chiefs last Saturday.
He didn’t need many snaps to make an impression.
Bain Leads All Defensive Rookies in PFF Grade
Pro Football Focus has graded every player throughout the preseason. Bain currently owns the highest grade among all defensive rookies.
His 88.8 overall grade leads the group. He sits ahead of Giants linebacker Arvell Reese, who has an 88.2 grade.
Bain’s former Miami teammate, Los Angeles Chargers edge rusher Akheem Mesidor, ranks third at 81.6.
There is an important caveat to those numbers. Bain has played only one preseason game and logged just six snaps.
Those six snaps came during two three-and-out possessions by Tampa Bay’s starting defense. That extremely limited sample could contribute to Bain sitting above his rookie competition.
Still, the rookie made those opportunities count.
His hump move against Kansas City’s left tackle has gained attention on social media. Bain also stayed with his assignment in coverage when asked to do so.
Another Opportunity Awaits in Jacksonville
Bain will have another opportunity to showcase his ability this week. The Buccaneers are heading to Jacksonville for joint practices with the Jaguars.
The teams will hold two joint practices before meeting Friday night. That matchup will serve as the final preseason game for both teams.
Bain’s preseason workload remains limited. However, the snaps he has received have already provided plenty of encouragement for Tampa Bay.
