We waited seven months for the first Buccaneers’ preseason game, and after the first quarter, most of us probably couldn’t wait for it to be over.
Teams now have controlled practices, which have made preseason games even less interesting than usual.
However, there is one thing that can’t be replicated in practice: special teams.

Tonight is the final opportunity for rookies and undrafted players to make their case for sticking around.
Danny Smith, the Bucs’ new special teams coach, will be making his case to Todd Bowles to keep a few players who may not make much of an impact on offense or defense but can make their presence felt on special teams.
I’ll be watching the Bucs’ kickoff and punt coverage units very closely. The final eight to ten players who make the 53-man roster may very well have to earn their spots on these units.
The job of a special teams coach is a thankless one. He constantly has to juggle his lineup because those last few roster spots can change several times throughout the season due to injuries.
On Sunday, we’ll find out which 53 players made the team.
Then the fun can really begin.
