Chris Godwin Gives Emeka Egbuka Major Vote of Confidence

Buccaneers’ Wide Receiver Chris Godwin has spent his NFL career around some exceptional wide receivers. That makes his latest praise for Emeka Egbuka especially significant.

The Buccaneers veteran believes Egbuka is the smartest receiver he has ever played with. He also sees plenty of similarities between himself and Tampa Bay’s young wideout.

There is one major difference, though.

Egbuka’s understanding of the game is already far beyond where Godwin’s was at the same point in his career.

Godwin Sees Himself in Egbuka

Godwin discussed Egbuka during an appearance on the Green Light with Chris Long podcast. The veteran receiver explained why the second-year wideout reminds him so much of himself.

“Egbuka’s probably been like the most similar player in terms of a receiver that I’ve played with in terms of body type, ability and kind of mental makeup as well,” Godwin said.

Godwin then offered perhaps the biggest compliment he could give Egbuka.

“It’s almost like looking at what I was like as a young guy; his mental capacity is so much further than where mine was at.”

That assessment becomes even more impressive considering Godwin’s experience.

He has spent years playing alongside elite receivers, including Mike Evans. Yet Godwin believes Egbuka already possesses an exceptional understanding of the game.

“I would say he’s the smartest receiver I’ve been around,” Godwin said. “He understands football from just an overall perspective. He looks at it through almost like a quarterback’s lens.”

That mental processing could become one of Egbuka’s biggest advantages entering his second NFL season.

Egbuka Ready for a Bigger Role

The Buccaneers selected Egbuka No. 19 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. He immediately showed why Tampa Bay viewed him as a potential cornerstone of its offense.

Egbuka started 13 games as a rookie and led the Buccaneers in receiving yards. Now, with another offseason under his belt, expectations have risen considerably.

He appears positioned to become Tampa Bay’s top receiving option.

Egbuka did not appear during the preseason because of a toe injury. However, the Buccaneers expect him to return to the lineup for their Week 1 matchup against Cincinnati.

If healthy, Egbuka could enter the season with significantly more responsibility.

Godwin’s endorsement suggests he is more than ready for it.

Godwin Passing Along His Experience

While Egbuka has already established himself, Godwin isn’t only focused on helping one young receiver.

The veteran is also working with the next wave of Tampa Bay pass catchers. That group includes rookie Ted Hurst, second-year receiver Tez Johnson and Jalen McMillan.

Godwin knows firsthand how difficult the transition to the NFL can be.

He wants to help the younger receivers avoid some of the mistakes he made early in his career, particularly when it comes to handling the speed and complexity of NFL practices.

“I think the biggest thing is really just learning how to practice,” Godwin said. “So many of them, they have so much talent and a lot of untapped potential, but then you get out there and things start to move fast and you start making some mistakes. You kind of get in your own head.”

Godwin benefited from veteran receivers during his own development. Now, he is trying to provide that same guidance to Tampa Bay’s younger players.

“The information that other people gave me that Mike [Evans] and [DeSean Jackson] and [Adam Humphries] and all these guys have given to me, I’m trying to pass it down to them,” Godwin said.

That mentorship could prove valuable as the Buccaneers transition into a new era at receiver.

For years, Tampa Bay’s receiving corps revolved around established veterans. Now, Egbuka appears ready to become the centerpiece of the next generation.

And if Godwin’s assessment is accurate, the young receiver has something even more valuable than talent.
