The Tampa Bay Buccaneers enter Sunday’s opener with plenty of star power at wide receiver.
Cincinnati boasts Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, while Tampa Bay has emerging talent in Emeka Egbuka. Yet Chris Godwin could ultimately become the game’s most productive receiver.
Godwin enters the season healthy and appears positioned for a significant workload against Cincinnati.
ESPN Analyst Predicts Heavy Workload for Godwin
ESPN’s Seth Walder expects Godwin to receive plenty of attention from Baker Mayfield.
“Buccaneers WR Chris Godwin Jr. will be targeted 10 or more times,” said Walder. “Emeka Egbuka sat out time in the preseason because of a toe injury, and Mike Evans is gone. At least in the short term, I could see targets consolidating around Godwin.”
That projection comes as expectations continue building around Godwin entering 2026.
His recent production has been limited by injuries. After fracturing his ankle in 2024, Godwin played just seven games and recorded 576 yards.
He returned for nine games last season but managed only 360 receiving yards. Now healthy, Godwin has an opportunity to remind everyone what he can do when fully available.
Baker Mayfield Sees a Different Godwin
Mayfield has already noticed a significant difference in Godwin.
The Buccaneers quarterback told Jenna Laine of ESPN that Godwin looks better than ever.
“Baker Mayfield had this to say about Chris Godwin today: “Chris Godwin looks like the best version of Chris Godwin I’ve seen and [I’m] really excited about that,” Laine posted.
That endorsement carries plenty of weight heading into a season where Godwin could become Mayfield’s most reliable target.
Godwin Could Lead Tampa Bay in Receptions
Scott Reynolds of Pewter Report also expects a major season from Godwin.
Reynolds made a bold prediction that Godwin will lead Tampa Bay in receptions during 2026.
“Egbuka leads the Bucs in yardage with around 800, but Godwin leads the team in catches,” stated Reynolds.
That projection fits the role Godwin appears positioned to play. Even if Egbuka becomes a major downfield weapon, Godwin could consistently accumulate opportunities underneath.
Analyst Sees 1,000 Yards Coming
Walder’s expectations extend beyond Sunday’s opener.
He believes Godwin has a legitimate opportunity to reach 1,000 receiving yards during the 2026 season.
“He hasn’t reached 1,000 yards in the past two seasons combined because of injuries, but I could see it happening,” wrote Walder.
That possibility makes Sunday’s matchup particularly intriguing. Godwin could begin his push toward that milestone with a massive workload immediately.
Cincinnati’s Slot Coverage Could Be Vulnerable
There is another reason to believe Godwin could see significant opportunities Sunday.
The Bengals’ biggest question in their secondary appears to be at slot cornerback. Jalen Davis is expected to start despite having only 600 career NFL snaps since entering the league in 2018.
Davis played a career-high 270 snaps last season and was a weakness for Cincinnati’s defense. The Bengals could also move safety Kyle Dugger into the nickel role.
Regardless of who lines up inside, Tampa Bay has an opportunity to attack that matchup.
Godwin’s Slot Role Could Be Crucial
Godwin has extensive experience working from the slot throughout his career.
He has played 2,308 career snaps from the slot compared to 1,877 snaps outside. Last season, he lined up inside for 54 percent of Tampa Bay’s offensive snaps.
That figure also closely matches his career rate. Tampa Bay therefore has a natural opportunity to put Godwin where he can consistently attack Cincinnati’s secondary.
Week 1 Could Start a Godwin Resurgence
The Buccaneers have plenty of receiving talent entering Sunday’s matchup. However, Godwin might have the clearest path toward a monster performance.
His health gives Tampa Bay a version of Godwin it hasn’t consistently had recently. His established slot role also creates a potentially favorable matchup against Cincinnati.
If Walder’s projection proves accurate, Godwin could see double-digit targets immediately. After two injury-affected seasons, Week 1 could mark the beginning of his biggest resurgence yet.
