The Tampa Bay Buccaneers opened their 2026 season with a frustrating 33-27 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
Tampa Bay Starts Season With Costly Mistakes
Tampa Bay fell behind 14-3 after the first quarter at Paycor Stadium. The Buccaneers also fumbled four times, including a costly Mayfield fumble near the goal line.
Those mistakes proved costly in a game Tampa Bay eventually had opportunities to win. However, another unusual problem may have contributed to the offense’s early struggles.
Mayfield Reveals Headset Problems
After the loss, Baker Mayfield revealed that Tampa Bay dealt with persistent headset issues during the game.
The problem affected communication inside the huddle and appeared to come and go throughout the afternoon. Mayfield explained that the equipment worked properly during sideline testing.
“We had some headset issues for quite a while, in and out. It’s not an excuse, but when they’re testing them on the sidelines, and they work fine. Then you get out in between the hashes, and it’s not working, that’s unfortunate,” Mayfield said in a press conference.
Mayfield said the issue was especially noticeable during the opening drive. It then resurfaced sporadically throughout the rest of the game.
“But it wasn’t the whole time, just kind of the first drive for sure and then sporadically throughout the rest of the game but yeah, we need to get in and out of the huddle quicker.”
Buccaneers Offense Shows Plenty of Potential
Despite the communication problems, Mayfield delivered an efficient performance against Cincinnati.
The Buccaneers quarterback completed 23 of 28 passes for 216 yards. Bucky Irving also provided a spark, rushing eight times for 45 yards and a touchdown.
Irving contributed through the air as well, while Emeka Egbuka emerged as another bright spot. Egbuka finished with five receptions for 63 yards.
Still, Tampa Bay left Cincinnati knowing its offense must clean up several issues. Four fumbles alone created too much adversity for a team capable of producing far more offensively.
Week 2 Brings An Immediate Opportunity
The Buccaneers cannot afford another performance filled with avoidable mistakes. Ball security and communication should become major priorities throughout this week’s practices.
The headset problems were certainly unusual, but Mayfield refused to use them as an excuse. Tampa Bay must eliminate the turnovers while finding more consistency and explosiveness on offense.
