Some Good News In Buccaneers Loss: Irving Delivers, And Rookie Trotter Makes NFL History

0

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ league-best run of five straight Week 1 victories came to an end Sunday in Cincinnati, falling 33-27 in a game that mixed frustration with flashes of promise. Tampa Bay kept pace throughout, but the Bengals’ late surge proved too much to overcome. Even in defeat, several Buccaneers delivered standout performances that will shape early-season expectations.

A Tough Opener With Bright Spots For Tampa Bay

Baker Mayfield opened his fourth season in Tampa with one of the most efficient Week 1 outings of his career. Completing 23-of-28 passes for 216 yards, he posted a 98.8 passer rating and added 30 rushing yards, including a tough 1-yard touchdown run. His 23 completions pushed him past Trent Dilfer and Vinny Testaverde on the franchise’s all-time completions list, moving him into fourth place. Mayfield’s command of the offense kept the Bucs competitive deep into the fourth quarter.

Irving Continues To Climb Among Young NFL Playmakers

Second-year running back Bucky Irving delivered another dual-threat performance, rushing eight times for 45 yards and a touchdown while matching his career high with seven receptions. His 5.6 yards per carry extended a trend that now includes nine career games with a 5.5-or-better average — seventh-most in the league since 2024. Irving’s consistency places him in elite company, trailing only Derrick Henry, Jahmyr Gibbs, Saquon Barkley, James Cook, Bijan Robinson and De’Von Achane.

Ted Talk

Rookie wide receiver Ted Hurst III added three catches for 36 yards in his debut, joining a short list of Tampa Bay receivers who produced at least three receptions and 35 yards in their first Week 1 appearance. Emeka Egbuka led the team with 63 receiving yards, crossing the 1,000-yard career milestone.

Trotter’s Historic Debut Powers The Defense

Linebacker Josiah Trotter delivered one of the most remarkable defensive debuts in NFL history. With 10 tackles, a sack and a 38-yard pick-six, he became the first player ever to record both a sack and an interception return touchdown in his NFL debut. His 10 tackles also set a Buccaneers rookie record for Week 1 since tackles became official in 1995.

Zyon McCollum and Jacob Parrish helped limit Bengals stars Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins to just 71 combined yards, with Chase held to only 12 — tied for the second-lowest total of his career.

Special Teams And Closing Notes

Chase McLaughlin remained automatic, hitting field goals from 34 and 51 yards and improving his league-best 50-plus-yard percentage since 2023. Josh Williams added a 47-yard kickoff return, Tampa Bay’s longest since 2024.

The Bucs return home next week looking to turn strong individual performances into a complete team win.
