The Tampa Bay Buccaneers opened their 2026 season with a disappointing 33-27 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
Buccaneers Open Season With Costly Mistakes
Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers offense moved the ball effectively at times. However, Tampa Bay’s turnover problems ultimately proved too costly to overcome.
Mayfield put the ball on the ground multiple times during Sunday’s road matchup. Those mistakes helped turn a winnable game into an early defeat.
Now, Mayfield gets an opportunity to respond against a familiar opponent.
Browns Coach Has Plenty of Respect for Mayfield
The Buccaneers return home next week to face the Cleveland Browns. Cleveland is the team that selected Mayfield first overall nearly a decade ago.
Browns head coach Todd Monken already has plenty of respect for what Mayfield brings to the field. He also believes the quarterback’s competitive nature will be on full display.
“He’s a great football player and highly competitive, and it’s irrespective of playing the Browns. He’s very prideful. He wants to play good football, and he’s a great football player,” said Monken, per Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com on X, formerly Twitter.
That assessment should make the upcoming matchup even more interesting. Mayfield has never been shy about playing with an edge.
Mayfield Has Always Played With a Chip
Throughout his career, Mayfield has carried a noticeable chip on his shoulder. That has included taking shots at former teams through the media.
He has also had opportunities to settle those scores on the field. Sunday’s performance against Cincinnati, however, provided another reminder that turnovers can quickly derail his play.
Mayfield recently signed a lucrative extension to remain with Tampa Bay long-term. The Buccaneers are counting on him to lead the offense after committing to him financially.
Cleveland Could Provide the Perfect Response
Mayfield has generally played at a solid level during his Buccaneers career. His production did decline considerably during the final portion of last season.
The turnover problems against Cincinnati added another concern to that recent stretch. Fortunately for Tampa Bay, the season is only one game old.
The Browns could provide Mayfield with an ideal opportunity to respond. Cleveland is widely expected to be among the league’s worst teams this season.
The Browns opened their season with a blowout loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Mayfield now has a chance to put Sunday’s mistakes behind him.
For the Buccaneers, the goal is simple. They need their quarterback and offense to turn a frustrating opener into a strong response at home.
