Week Two Skeleton Keys To Victory: Browns vs Buccaneers

0

Week two of the NFL season will be here soon. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing loss last week. This time they will host the Cleveland Browns in Tampa as their home opener.

I feel like we say this every year, but the Browns aren’t a very good team. This is a game where you expect the Bucs to take care of business. However, we saw last week that just because you’re the better team on paper doesn’t mean you’ll win the game.

In order to win this game, the team will have to do all the right things on the field. They’ll have to follow my week two skeleton keys to victory.

Protect The Ball

As we saw last week, the fastest way to lose to an inferior team is to turn the ball over. The Bucs can’t let that happen to them two weeks in a row. Baker Mayfield will have to do a much better job at protecting the rock.

Obviously the fumbles come to mind after last week, but not throwing interceptions is just as important. Be aware of star cornerback Denzel Ward on the outside and linebacker Carson Schwesinger over the middle. This Browns team isn’t very good, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t have playmakers who can hurt you if you’re careless.

Defensive Line On The Offensive

Last week was a disappointing showing for the Buccaneers defensive line. Against a Cincinnati Bengals team who has an average at best offensive line, the Bucs could not consistently generate pressure. The need to have a bounce back week against Cleveland and I believe they will.

The Browns offensive line added some notable names in the offseason, but they still have to figure things out and gel together. Last week they didn’t always look on the same page and gave up five sacks. If the Bucs can do something similar then that will make things much easier for everyone else on defense.

It’s also important to highlight the defensive line’s importance in run defense. Vita Vea and A’Shawn Robinson aren’t necessarily here to rush the passer. They are here to smother the running game and make sure opponents can’t run the ball down the middle like they did last week.

Limit Rookie Pass Catchers

I thought the Browns had a great draft class this year. Part of that is the pair of rookie wide receivers that they were able to get. They took KC Concepcion from Texas A&M in the first round and Denzel Boston from Washington  in the second round.

These two bring a great combination of speed and agility (Concepcion) and size and fluidity (Boston). Both have been named starters to start the year and will get every opportunity to shine. If the Bucs want to win this game then they will have to contain these two impressive rookies.

Much of that will fall on cornerbacks Zyon McCollum and potentially Benjamin Morrison. Morrison came in the game last week after Jacob Parrish got injured and played well. We don’t yet know the status of Parrish as I write this, but if he can’t go then this will be another important test for Morrison.
