Baker Mayfield Dealing With Illness Ahead of Buccaneers’ Vikings Game

Baker Mayfield has struggled through the first two games of the season. Now, the Buccaneers quarterback is dealing with an undisclosed illness.

That creates another concern for a Tampa Bay team desperately needing better play from its franchise quarterback. The Buccaneers face the undefeated Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.

Buccaneers Need More From Mayfield

Tampa Bay made a massive commitment to Mayfield by giving him a record-setting contract. The expectation was that he would lead the offense at a high level.

Instead, Mayfield has struggled to provide the consistency the Buccaneers expected. Through two games, Tampa Bay has seen a disappointing version of its quarterback.

Mayfield has completed 44 of 62 passes for fewer than 400 yards. He has one touchdown and four turnovers, including one interception.

The turnovers have obviously created problems for Tampa Bay. However, Mayfield’s struggles extend beyond his inability to protect the football.

He has looked uncomfortable in the pocket and inconsistent when throwing to receivers downfield. Those issues have prevented the offense from reaching its potential through two games.

Mayfield’s Illness Adds Another Concern

There was at least some reason to believe Mayfield could turn things around against Minnesota. His career has included inconsistent stretches followed by strong performances.

Unfortunately, the Buccaneers now have another variable to consider before Sunday’s game. Mayfield’s illness could interfere with both his preparation and his performance.

Mayfield did not participate in his scheduled press conference following Wednesday’s practice. Shortly afterward, it was reported that his absence resulted from an undisclosed illness.

The timing is particularly concerning for Tampa Bay. Mayfield needs every opportunity to prepare for a difficult Minnesota defense.

Vikings Present a Difficult Challenge

The Vikings already present a significant challenge for an offense searching for consistency. Defensive coordinator Brian Flores is known for creating difficult situations for opposing quarterbacks.

That could make Sunday’s matchup especially challenging for Mayfield. He has already struggled with pressure and discomfort through the opening two games.

Tampa Bay needs its quarterback to find his rhythm against Minnesota. An illness potentially limiting his preparation only makes that challenge more difficult.

Buccaneers Need Their Best Mayfield

If Mayfield cannot play at his best Sunday, the Buccaneers could face another difficult afternoon. Tampa Bay needs its franchise quarterback to finally deliver the performance everyone expected.

The offense cannot afford another turnover-filled outing from Mayfield. His health and preparation will be especially important against a defense capable of creating problems.

Hopefully, Mayfield is dealing with nothing more than a minor illness. The Buccaneers need him healthy and prepared when they take the field Sunday.
