Leonard Fournette Sends Strong Message About Todd Bowles After 0-2 Start

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 0-2, and the pressure surrounding head coach Todd Bowles is already intensifying.

The Pewter Pirates entered the season with division-winning expectations. Losses to the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns have instead left the Buccaneers desperately searching for answers.

Now, a former Buccaneers star believes the organization may need to consider a major change.

Leonard Fournette Says Todd Bowles’ Time Could Be Up

Former Buccaneers running back Leonard Fournette recently shared his thoughts on Bowles during his podcast.

Fournette played for Tampa Bay when Bowles served as the team’s defensive coordinator. He also won his only Super Bowl with the Buccaneers during the 2021 season.

“We all know the standard. To me, I just feel like maybe the time is up. Just being real. It’s time for Coach Bowles to wrap it up and move on. Now if they go, 0-3, bring the alarm because we all know, even despite when Tom Brady left and Baker came in, you still had a hell of a good season. Man, I don’t know what to say at this point.”

That is a significant statement from someone who previously played under Bowles.

Fournette’s comments also highlight how quickly expectations have changed around Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers were supposed to compete for the division, but they now face the possibility of starting 0-3.

Week 3 Carries Major Pressure For Bowles

The Buccaneers’ next game comes at home against the Minnesota Vikings.

Tampa Bay cannot afford to continue its current momentum with another loss. Falling to 0-3 would only intensify the questions surrounding Bowles and his future.

Minnesota enters the matchup with a 2-0 record. The Vikings have already produced strong performances on both sides of the football.

Their offense powered a Week 1 victory over Green Bay. Their defense then delivered a strong performance against Chicago in Week 2.

Tampa Bay therefore needs a significantly better overall performance to avoid another loss.

Bowles’ Defense Has To Provide Answers

Bowles’ reputation is closely tied to his defensive expertise.

He served as Tampa Bay’s defensive coordinator when the Buccaneers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LV. That defense held Patrick Mahomes to one of the worst performances of his Super Bowl career.

That success helped establish Bowles’ reputation around the league.

But several years have passed since that championship. Tampa Bay’s roster has changed, and the Buccaneers now need Bowles’ defense to produce answers again.

Minnesota presents another major challenge, particularly with Justin Jefferson playing at a high level.

The Browns Loss Made Things Worse

The Week 1 loss against Cincinnati was certainly disappointing.

However, Tampa Bay’s loss against Cleveland created even more concern. The Browns entered that matchup after suffering a 34-10 loss to Jacksonville.

Tampa Bay also held a 16-6 lead during the third quarter before ultimately losing 23-19.

That kind of loss makes an 0-2 start considerably more difficult to dismiss.

Fournette believes another defeat could be the point where the conversation around Bowles changes completely.

Bowles Needs To Change The Narrative

Tampa Bay still has plenty of season remaining.

But the Buccaneers cannot afford to keep wasting opportunities while waiting for things to improve. The longer the losing streak continues, the louder the questions surrounding Bowles will become.

Fournette has already made his position clear.

If Tampa Bay falls to 0-3, the pressure surrounding Bowles could reach another level. For a team that entered the season expecting to compete for the division, that would represent a disastrous opening three weeks.

Bowles now has an opportunity to provide the response his team desperately needs.

The Vikings will provide a difficult test. Tampa Bay needs to pass it.
