The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will face the Minnesota Vikings without two of their top young defensive players.
Rookie defenders Rueben Bain and Josiah Trotter have both been ruled out for Sunday’s matchup. Bain is dealing with a groin injury, while Trotter is sidelined by a shoulder injury.
Both rookies earned starting roles immediately this season. Their absences now force Todd Bowles to adjust his defensive rotation.
Who Replaces Rueben Bain?
Bain’s absence should create additional opportunities for Al-Quadin Muhammad and David Walker.
Both players should see increased responsibilities with the rookie unavailable. Anthony Nelson can also provide valuable snaps within the outside linebacker rotation.
That depth gives Bowles several options on the edge. However, losing Bain still removes an important young piece from the defensive front.
The Buccaneers selected Bain 15th overall because they expected him to contribute immediately. He had started Tampa Bay’s first two games before suffering his groin injury against Cleveland.
Now the remaining edge rushers must collectively replace his workload.
SirVocea Dennis Gets Another Opportunity
Trotter’s absence creates an even bigger adjustment at inside linebacker.
SirVocea Dennis should receive more defensive snaps alongside veteran Alex Anzalone. Christian Rozeboom should also contribute as Tampa Bay reshuffles its linebacker rotation.
Trotter had established himself as a starter after an impressive preseason. Bowles specifically praised his intelligence and consistency before the regular season began.
The rookie then produced a team-high 11 tackles against Cleveland. His absence therefore removes a productive young player from the middle of the defense.
What Does This Mean for Todd Bowles?
Bowles now has to lean more heavily on his defensive depth against Minnesota.
The challenge is not simply replacing two players. Tampa Bay must replace their snaps, responsibilities and versatility within the scheme.
Muhammad and Walker will need to keep the edge rotation productive without Bain. Dennis and Rozeboom must help maintain stability behind the defensive line.
That puts additional pressure on the veterans surrounding those players. Anzalone, in particular, will have an increased responsibility communicating and organizing the linebacker group.
The Defense Has to Find Another Gear
Losing two starters is never ideal, especially when both are young players expected to develop into important pieces.
The Buccaneers can still compensate through their overall defensive rotation. They have multiple players capable of absorbing additional snaps at both positions.
But Bowles cannot simply expect one player to replace Bain or Trotter individually.
The Buccaneers will need contributions from Muhammad, Walker, Dennis, Rozeboom and the veterans around them. How effectively that group responds could determine how well Tampa Bay’s defense handles Minnesota.
Bain and Trotter are out, so the Buccaneers must rely on their depth. Now Bowles needs that depth to prove it can hold up.
