Baker Mayfield has struggled since signing his massive contract extension with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Through two games, Mayfield has committed four turnovers while Tampa Bay has fallen to 0-2. Clearly, there are several areas where the quarterback needs to improve.
The turnovers are an obvious problem. Mayfield also needs to do a better job working through his progressions.
However, there is another issue that could be affecting several areas of his game.
Mayfield Needs a Faster Internal Clock
Mayfield needs to fix his internal clock. He has held onto the football far too long during the opening games.
That creates unnecessary pressure on the offensive line. It also rarely produces anything positive for the Buccaneers.
Too often, Mayfield eventually takes off running after holding the football. By that point, the play has already broken down.
The longer he holds the ball, the more difficult his job becomes. It also puts additional pressure on everyone trying to execute around him.
The Three-Second Rule
The solution could be relatively simple. Mayfield needs to establish a three-second clock after the snap.
Once the ball is snapped, Mayfield needs to make his decision quickly. He needs to get the ball out or take off within three seconds.
That does not mean forcing throws into coverage. It means making quicker decisions when the initial read isn’t there.
A faster internal clock could help Mayfield in several areas. It could also reduce pressure on an offensive line already dealing with plenty of responsibility.
The Buccaneers need a better version of Mayfield moving forward. Fixing his internal clock should be one of the quarterback’s biggest priorities.
