A Bucky Irving Pitch Count Makes Perfect Sense for Buccaneers

0

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a plan for Bucky Irving this season. Considering his recent injury history, that plan makes plenty of sense.

Offensive coordinator Zac Robinson spoke with reporters this week. Robinson revealed that Irving will be on a pitch count this season, via Pewter Report.

The decision is based on the longevity of the NFL season. Robinson also wants to ride the hot hand during games.

Bucky Irving’s Injury History

Irving missed seven games during the 2025 season. He dealt with an unusual injury situation that limited him to just 10 games.

That history makes Tampa Bay’s approach understandable. The Buccaneers need Irving healthy throughout the entire season.

Irving only recently turned 24 years old. There is no reason to unnecessarily run him into the ground early.

Tampa Bay Needs Irving At His Best

Irving showed exactly why Tampa Bay needs to protect him. He rushed for 1,122 yards and eight touchdowns as a rookie in 2024.

His production took a hit during the 2025 season. However, his talent remains a major part of Tampa Bay’s offensive plans.

Through two games in 2026, Irving has rushed for 134 yards and one touchdown. Those numbers could increase as the season progresses.

Kenneth Gainwell Can Help

Robinson also wants to ride the hot hand during games. That approach could create additional opportunities for Kenneth Gainwell.

That’s not necessarily a negative for Irving. Instead, it could help Tampa Bay keep its starting running back fresh.

The Buccaneers need Irving available for the entire season. Giving him a controlled workload could help accomplish that goal.

Tampa Bay has plenty of football remaining in 2026. Protecting Irving now could prove valuable later.

The Buccaneers face the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. A healthy Irving could be a major part of that matchup.
