Buccaneers Are 0-3, Now What?

The month of September, which has typically been one of the best months of Buccaneers’ football under Todd Bowles, has been the exact opposite this season.

I’m not ready to throw in the towel.

History tells us that the odds of making the playoffs after an 0-3 start are slim to none. And yet, there are still 14 games remaining.

My fall and winter revolve around football. Every other sport is simply a nice time filler until the Bucs play. In fact, the bye week is a week I dread because it means going 13 days without Bucs football.

So, with 3.5 months of football still ahead of us, what are we supposed to do if we decide that watching the team we love isn’t worth the three hours on game day, let alone the additional hours spent on social media commiserating with fellow fans about just how bad we are?

—

My emotions on Sunday, as I sat through what was arguably the worst offensive performance I’ve ever witnessed, went from anger to frustration, then sadness and, finally, resignation.

I was sitting about 25 rows behind the Buccaneers bench, with a clear view of the purple takeover that had occurred in the lower bowl and throughout the stadium.

Fans are free to attend games or stay home, but it might be a while before I subject myself to that experience again. It simply wasn’t fun!

One of the main reasons I make the trip to Tampa each season is to be surrounded by Buccaneers fans. If I wanted to be surrounded by purple, I’d go to Minneapolis.

All that being said, I don’t want to throw away the season, even though the likelihood of salvaging it is slim. I still believe this team has a chance to make a push for the division title.

Obviously, the margin for error is paper-thin. But this week, the Bucs have an opportunity to take advantage of a Packers offensive line dealing with some issues of its own.

Green Bay has been dealing with injuries along the interior of its offensive line, creating an opportunity for the Bucs’ defensive front to make its presence felt.

—

Tampa Bay’s defensive line actually played well last Sunday, and if it can generate pressure up the middle, disrupt the running game and force Jordan Love into uncomfortable situations, the Bucs could have an opportunity to control the game.

If the Bucs are going to win this game, that’s where it starts.

Obviously, the margin for error is paper-thin. But this week, they have an opportunity to start turning things around by taking advantage of a weakened opponent in the trenches.

Start October with a win, and at least give the fans SOMETHING to get a little excited about.

As Bucs fans, we’re used to seeing the absurd and the ridiculous from this organization. So who knows? Maybe, just maybe, they can pull off a miracle!

Of all the NFL teams that I could follow, why did I choose the Tampa Bay Buccaneers? It was 1979, I was an impressionable 12-year-old living in Canada. At that time, getting any NFL coverage was tough enough but that was reserved for the elite teams like the Cowboys, Steelers etc. I watched one game at 1 PM and one game at 4 PM. That was it. No Redzone, no night games on Sunday Each Christmas my family would drive from Montreal to visit my aunt in Jacksonville. I remember seeing the Bucs playing on TV against the Falcons when I was there. I saw something that day that changed my fandom forever. There was a QB wearing number 12, in an orange jersey and he wasn’t white! As a minority myself, seeing a non-white QB was something that immediately I was drawn to. I knew that this was the team, and this was the guy who I would follow. The years between 1979 and 1997 were obviously difficult but my fandom never wavered. If anything, it made me stronger as a person. I’ve often joked that I’ve had 3 wives but only ONE football team. I was asked if I wanted to write the occasional article for Bucs Report. Talking and writing about the Bucs is a full-time hobby so of course my answer was YES. I’m 56, retired and living in Costa Rica now. I sport 4 Buc tattoos and have been fortunate to make many visits to Tampa to watch the Bucs. I’ve made countless friends and even more memories. I look forward to chatting and interacting with the many Buccaneer fans throughout the world. Go Bucs Greg D’Cruz
