Dirk Koetter Lucks Out with Illegal Challenge

During overtime on Sunday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers lined up for a game-winning field goal with under 2 minutes on the clock. Head Coach Dirk Koetter decided to throw the challenge flag.

Officials told Koetter that in overtime situations only the booth is able to review plays and that he was not allowed to initiate a challenge.

Koetter was trying to challenge a 14-yard pass to DeSean Jackson that would have placed the Buccaneers in better field goal range. The result of Dirk Koetter’s infraction was a loss of Tampa’s final timeout. Tampa was lucky that was all they lost. Koetter could have had his team penalized 15 yards for the infraction, which would have put Tampa in a nasty predicament.

The pauses in the game could have iced kicker Chandler Catanzaro, resulting in a missed field goal and another opportunity for the Browns to win the game. Luckily the opposite occurred, and Catanzaro nailed a 59-yard kick, winning the game.
