Buccaneers’ Fournette Shows Up for Camp at 245 lbs

Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ running back Leonard Fournette showed up to training camp weighing 245 lbs this week. As reported by Pro Football Focus’ Doug Kyed. This after reports of him being nearly 260 lbs at minicamp last month.

Why is this news? Well, the initial report by the Tampa Bay Times‘ Rick Stroud of Fournette being overweight caused quit a stir. Looking at it as it played out, Fournette was indeed looking heavy at minicamp. But let’s be honest, most players come in a bit heavy and/or somewhat out of shape. It’s kind of in part what training camp is for.

Fournette dismissed the initial reports as he typically has played between 228 lbs and 240 lbs, so 245 lbs isn’t far off from his average. Factor in he’ll definitely shed some pounds during training camp, Fournette looks great.

Leonard Fournette is and always has been a big, bruising style running back. Hell, some of the players he’s stiff-armed in his career have yet to recover, at least mentally. You also have to factor in the belief that the Buccaneers’ offense will be a tad more run oriented under Todd Bowles. When you consider this offense might be a little less risk it and more pounding the biscuit, Fournette’s weight isn’t a bad thing. It’s probably right where it needs to be.
