Buccaneers Face Major Decision With Winfield Jr

0

Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ safety Antoine Winfield Jr is eligible for a contract extension after this season. Winfield Jr was a second-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft. That technically keeps him under contract through the 2024 season.

With that said, Winfield Jr has more than earned an extension, that’s not really up for debate. What is up for debate is whether the Buccaneers should lock him in after this season, eschewing his last year under his rookie deal. A deal which is obviously cheaper than what he would re-sign for. Allowing Winfield Jr to play out his rookie deal in essence let’s him test the free agent market after the 2024 NFL season.

Basically the Buccaneers have a decision to make. Re-sign him after this season and lose the discount of the last year of his rookie deal. Or, roll the dice and hope he doesn’t decide to test the free agent waters after the 2024 season.

The Buccaneers front office brass knows the importance of this decision, and it appears as though Winfield Jr does too.

Monday, David Mulugheta from Athletes First announced they are representing Winfield Jr. Athletes First is a heavy hitters type sport agency firm. The list of their current clients reads as a who’s who of NFL stars, including, Jalen Ramsey, Aaron Rodgers, Justin Fields, and Dak Prescott

This is a savvy move by Winfield Jr who has been a key figure in the Bucs recent successes. As mentioned earlier, this isn’t a decision of whether the Bucs will re-sign him, it’s a matter of when they choose too.
