Buccaneers’ Davis Has Ja’Marr Chase’s Respect

Do you think that Buccaneers’ Carlton Davis was playing man coverage against Ja’Marr Chase when he shut him down?

So, there has been a clip circulating online with Ja’Marr Chase talking to Devin McCourty. McCourty was a really good CB, so naturally he wanted to ask Chase who the best CB that he has ever played against. Chase, one of the best WRs in his own right, probably surprised a few people when he said Carlton Davis. Bucs fans obviously know who Davis, but I was a little shocked that Chase would’ve said him.

In the clip, Chase mentions one of the reasons that Davis is so good is because of his length. While Davis is not exactly Victor Wembanyama levels of lankiness, but he definitely has some length, which I think surprises some WRs for the first time. His arms are 32 1/4″, and say what you will about the man, he knows how to use those freakish arms to knock passes away. Assuming he’s not playing ten yards off the receiver.

The Bengals have played one regular season game since Ja’Marr Chase has been in the league. When Davis was covering him, Chase had eight targets. Chase managed three catches for 32 yards, and Davis recorded an interception. That’s what you would call pretty freaking good. And rewatching some clips from that game, Davis absolutely locked Chase down on most snaps.

There are CBs that are arguably better than Carlton Davis and have played better against Chase (Pat Surtain only allowed one reception for 3 yards). However, I think Davis’s combination of athletic ability and ball tracking skills makes him one of the better CBs. If only Bowles would allow him to play man more, than this secondary might get some interceptions.
