A Buccaneers Homecoming For Mike Tomlin?

I thought we wanted an offensive coach for the Buccaneers, what happened?

Well, here we are. Steelers vs Patriots wasn’t the worst football game that the world has ever seen. The Steelers on the other hand look horrific. They have lost two games in a row to teams 8 games under .500. A stat that I’m almost positive came from a Ravens fan. Nevertheless, Steelers fans are calling for Mike Tomlin’s head for the 800th time. This time, however, there seems to be a real chance that could happen at the end of the season. If it were to happen, many fans want to see a reunion for Mike Tomlin in Tampa.

I do actually believe that there is a good chance Tomlin is gone after this season. He is not a bad coach, otherwise I wouldn’t be writing this, but he has his issues. The Steelers right now look pretty bad. There is also a good chance that the team will lose out since they have a pretty difficult schedule to end the season with Mitchell Trubisky. Of course, when you lose to the patriots and Cardinals, every team is difficult.

If he is let go of, there is a good chance that many teams would look at him. And I’m almost positive one of them will be the Buccaneers. He was the DBs coach back in the Dungy area, so the team is very much familiar with him. On top of that, he is good at getting players to play for him. For all of his faults and all of his cliches, one thing that he is great at is getting players to like him. While his teams have the most inexplicable ability to lose games they should win, his teams seem to rise to the challenge. To put it like this, if he was the Bucs coach this season, they would’ve beaten the Eagles and 49ers, but lost to the Panthers.

The one thing that we have to consider is the fate of Dave Canales. While I can’t say he is having a bad season, he is also not having a great one. To give him some credit, he has had a lot of good moments and has gotten the run game to work better as the season goes on. However, he seems to stubbornly insist on running the ball on 1st down every time and also in other situations that are not appropriate for running the ball.

A lot of fans have placed that on Todd Bowles telling him to run the ball like that. I actually don’t think so, but it is possible. Regardless, it is mostly Canales fault that he can’t get Chris Godwin open. I know that since Bowles doesn’t seem to be aware of how often Godwin is on the field. My point here is whether or not Canales can work well with another defensive coach.

I wouldn’t exactly be excited about Tomlin coming back, I wouldn’t be super upset either. Tomlin has proven to be a good coach, especially with a good roster. I would still prefer an offensive minded coach, especially if the Buccaneers get a new QB. But Tomlin has proven to be a consistent coach that can win games with a good roster. Though the Bucs have holes, this roster doesn’t have nearly as many holes as I thought it would. I will say this, he will probably have the defense better than it is right He could probably scare the injury bug away from Jamel Dean and Carlton Davis.
