Dave Canales Wants to Stay in Tampa

Though Dave Canales hasn’t been perfect, he has gained the notice of many outside the of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers nation.

There have been several articles written saying how he could be a dark horse HC candidate. And while I personally wouldn’t want to hire someone so green as my HC, I can understand the appeal. He’s just a really likeable guy. Todd Bowles said one of the reasons they took a chance on him was not just his football intelligence, but also his personality. Right now, only the Panthers have requested an interview with him. But, it seems like he is fine in Tampa for now.

He stated this during his press conference, “I’d love to be in Tampa for a long time. I know whatever our plans are for the future, Baker has been unbelievable. For whatever job I may get credited for – Baker, the belief in himself, the ability to bring a team together to grow, to continue to own his growth and own his mistakes. I just love that kind of guy. I love being around him.”

This doesn’t sound like a guy that has one foot out the door. It seems like he really likes it in Tampa. However, I will note that a lot of that quote seems to hinge on Baker. His praise for him is pretty effusive. That makes me wonder then if Licht for whatever reason decides not to resign Baker if Canales might take that as a cue to leave.

Obviously, to be considered a HC in the NFL is a great honor. There are afterall only 32 of them. The fact that Canales is already being considered is a huge credit to his ability. I know that Bucs fans and pundits have harped on some of his play sequencing and his stubbornness to run the football. I’m not excluding myself either.

There have been some games that were very frustrating to watch. However, he has still improved the offense. We are up to 25.2 ppg compared to last year under Leftwich and his 18.2 ppg. And that offense had Tom Brady. At the end of the day, he has done a good job. The Bucs would be worse if they lost him. It remains to be seen whether or not other teams will ask to interview him or if he will change his mind about leaving, but him wanting to stay is great news for this team.
