Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and safety Antoine Winfield Jr are working towards a long-term deal. It is expected that the deal would make Winfield Jr the highest paid safety in the NFL.
The Bucs put the franchise tag on Winfield Jr back in early March. That tag (non-exclusive) would pay him $17.1 million in 2024. Schefter is reporting this new long-term deal would be in excess of $19 million per season. That number would eclipse the current highest paid safety Derwin James.
Antoine Winfield Jr. and Tee Higgins are the last two remaining players to be franchised this off-season not to land a long-term deal.

“The Buccaneers used the “non-exclusive” franchise tag on Winfield, meaning he can negotiate with other teams but Tampa Bay retains a right to match any contract offer. If Winfield does sign with another team and the offer is notmatched, his new team must send two first-round draft picks to the Buccaneers.”
