dirk-koetter-300x218With the Oakland Raiders and Head Coach Jack Del Rio coming into Ray J on Sunday, it has become a sort of Reunion between the Bucs staff and Raiders staff.

Dirk Koetter, Mike Smith, and Todd Monken all owe their respective beginnings to Del Rio who brought them into Jacksonville during his time there. “Jacksonville [is where] I got my start in the NFL, so big thanks to Del Rio. I’ll always be indebted to him for that,” says Koetter who served under Del Rio from ’07-’11. “When you’re putting together your coaching staff [as a head coach] – I got a huge book on guys at every position. You can’t always get the guys you want, but we were really fortunate to get a lot of the guys we wanted [in Tampa].” – an Expert from Jenna Laine’s Relationships forged in Jacksonville paved way for Dirk Koetter’s Bucs staff from August.

Daytona Beach native Mike Smith was hired in Del Rio’s first year in Duval county in 2003 and stayed until 2008 becoming the Falcons head coach and earning NFL Coach of the year in his first year as an HC.

Todd Monken got his start in the NFL from Del Rio when he was hired in Jacksonville as WR coach in 2007 through 2010 after, like Koetter, had a long collegiate coaching career.

The Del Rio coaching tree might not be as historic as Tony Dungy’s or Bill Walsh’s but Jack Del Rio is a good coach with a good eye for other good coaches and the much of the Bucs staff is thankful for.
