The Curse Of The Kicker

The kick is up….

Yeah we all know how this one goes. Another tale of what if and missed opportunities, missed kicks and points left on the field.

During the off season it all looked set. Chandler Catanzaro couldn’t miss. Then came the opening night against Miami, Bucs fans were hopeful and then reality bit and took a chunk of flesh. A missed extra point and a missed field goal lead the team to work out  Nick Rose after a very uncertain night for the Tampa Bay placekicker.

Converting attempts from 27 and 26 yards, including the game winning kick will have stopped a complete loss in confidence; however a miss from 53 yards to put the game beyond doubt with a little over 3 minutes left in the game is a black mark.

At this level an extra point kick should be a certainty and anything inside 60 yards should be kicked with a high percentage. Let’s remember that Catanzaro has a career high of 60 yards! Kickers at this level are highly paid professionals who have one job, to make kicks.

If he shows he cannot do that then in comes the next guy. But, Bucs fans have got to be wondering if some strange Hoodoo has been placed on the Bay Area since the departure of Matt Bryant.

How long before everyone is asking “This again?”
