2019 stat predictions: Matt Gay

A kicker on a stat prediction article? You bet. This position has been nothing but bad news for the Buccaneers in recent years. Do I even need to go down the cursed kicker list… Roberto Aguayo? Bust. Ryan Lindell? Most of you all forget who he is. Kyle Brindza? Comical. So yes, the kicker position for Tampa Bay be will be vitally important to winning football games. However, this new guy, Matt Gay, looks the part. He’s played soccer since he was a toddler and has always had a knack for kicking, and kicking accurately.

What a kicker

The six-foot 230-pound kicker out of Utah played two stellar seasons for the Utes. In 2017, Gay went 40-40 on extra points and 30-34 on field goals made for an elite 88.2 field goal percentage. He was rewarded for his dominating efforts with an All-American vote as well as taking home the coveted Lou Groza Award, given to the nation’s top kicker. In 2018, he followed up that campaign with another perfect 45-45 on extra points and 26-31 on field goals made to bring his career average to 86.2. He left the NCAA with the ninth highest field goal percentage in college football history. And so far, it seems he’s been bringing that same swagger and consistency to Tampa Bay.

Predictions
  • 37/39 Extra Points
  • 26/31 Field Goals
Overview
It’s hard to really sell yourself on Buccaneer kickers nowadays. But to me, this guy seems like a stud. Some people were born to play the game of football. Gay was born to be a kicker. I believe he’s found a home for the next 10 plus years…..all “curses” aside.
