Arians Reveals Buccaneers’ Play Of The Year For 2020

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released the second episode of the team-produced series In The Current earlier in the week and it was another solid installment.

Just like the first episode, there were some great moments. One of those said moments is when Bruce Arians called Jamel Dean‘s pick-six against the Packers in Week 6 the play of the year.

“Jamel Dean makes the biggest play of the year, I think, on that pick-six,” Arians says during the episode. “It changed everything in that game.”

It makes a ton of sense for Arians to view this as the biggest play of the Buccaneers’ 2020 season. The Buccaneers were coming an extremely frustrating and disappointing loss in Chicago that dropped them to 3-2 on the season. Now, they were down 10-0 against what was considered the NFC’s best team -at the time- in Green Bay.

“We started out pretty slow,” says Ndamukong Suh. “And then as things started to kind of dial in, and [we started] to understand what they wanted to do against us on the offensive side of the ball, we started to get after them.”

And that’s exactly what the Buccaneers and Dean do during the play. He squats on Davante Adams‘ route and as Aaron Rodgers stares the receiver down, it’s apparent the ball is coming Adams’ and Dean’s way. Dean reads it all the way through. He then jumps in front of Adams and takes it to the house to make it a 10-7 game.

Jamel Dean (at the top of the screen) just sits on Davante Adams’ route and Aaron Rodgers stares him down the entire time. The end result is a pick-six.

Watch Rodgers’ head, here. He looks left at Adams as soon as the ball is snapped and never looks in another direction before attempting the pass. It also doesn’t help that Aaron Jones misses his block on a blitzing Sean-Murphy Bunting:

Watch Rodgers’ head as it points left toward Adams as soon as the ball is snapped. It also helps that Aaron Jones (to the right of Rodgers) misses the blitz pickup.

And if that’s not enough of an indicator, here’s a perfect vantage point of Rodgers’ eyes. He’s essentially staring a hole through Adams’ body:

I just get so lost when I look at you, Davante.

The momentum changed from that very moment. The Buccaneers would go on to score 38 straight points (including the pick-six) en route to a huge, 38-10 win. The win moved the Buccaneers to 5-2 on the season, whereas a loss would’ve placed the team at 3-3.

“We were down 10-0 and they had the ball,” Lavonte David explains during his interview.

“A play had to be made.”

You can catch a new episode of the six-part series, In The Current, every Wednesday night at 8PM EST on buccaneers.com.
