Following Tom Brady’s retirement, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are leaving no stone unturned in looking for their next quarterback. This will require a thorough examination of a large number of prospective targets, some of which will be unexpected.

According to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, the Buccaneers have done background work on Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield.

This comes amid allegations that the Browns are considering Houston’s Deshaun Watson as a potential trade target, making Mayfield expendable. We’ve heard the Buccaneers are reportedly interested in trading for Watson. Mayfield would be a potential consolation prize for whichever team doesn’t get Watson.

The Browns have apparently told Mayfield that they are dedicated to him, for what it’s worth. Mayfield is coming off the poorest season of his career. The first overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft, Mayfield only had 17 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. This would definitely a project for coach Bruce Arians and company.

Let’s say the Buccaneers do end up with Mayfield it would definitely feel like a consolation prize. Mayfield could be exciting in an Arians/Leftwich offense. The flip side is Mayfield could also be another 30/30 quarterback in this system.
