The Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback situation is still up in the air according to head coach Todd Bowles and anyone you may ask at One Buc Place.
This quarterback competition is apparently over in some outlets minds. Count Sports Illustrated’s Conor Orr among those already relinquishing the job to Baker Mayfield.
Orr recently dropped his “100 Bold Predictions for the 2023 NFL season.” And Buccaneers’ quarterback Baker Mayfield made the list.
Per Orr’s article,
“The Buccaneers’ quarterback, who is helping to buoy the franchise during its post–Tom Brady half-tank, will have a solid campaign, certainly enough to vault him into a perpetual roster spot for however long he pleases. Will he be the Geno Smith surprise of the year? Probably not. But he will outplay the circumstances, as he has done fairly consistently throughout his career.”
Mayfield’s professional career has been a mixed-bag. He’s excelled in some situations, but faltered in others. He was an absolute beast in college at Oklahoma. After being selected number one overall by the Cleveland Browns in 2018 he ended up leading that team to their first playoff birth in 17 years and first playoff win since 1994. That’s not nothing.
Maybe the sour attitude from the Buccaneers’ faithful towards Mayfield is just part of the Tom Brady hangover? Maybe Mayfield isn’t the guy for the long-term? But at least one analyst thinks he could be.
