The Buccaneers Should Target This Potential Defensive Free Agent Playing In Sunday’s Divisional Round

Each season as we look at teams that make the post-season and we see that depth is key. For Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht is sure to be doing the same thing. Afterall that’s how Shaq Barret came to be a Buccaneer. In the previous article we looked at one underrated free agent on offense in the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs. Here we look at one defensive player that could add depth to the Buccaneers roster.

Cam Lewis

Currently sitting behind Jordan Poyer, Taylor Rapp, and Micha Hyde sits Cam Lewis at safety. An undrafted free agent who has been buried deep on the roster. With strong solid players above him he has been bounced between the practice squad and active roster. Thus he’s seen the field very little over the last four seasons.

This season however his playing time has jumped to 146 snaps on defense. Now that’s a small sample size but but his constant increase in snaps, especially with those names above him on the roster, shows he’s moving in the right direction.

According to PFF this season he’s been graded at 78.2 on defense, 84.2 on run defense, 80.5 in tackling, and 72.8 in coverage. Solid numbers with limited playing time. During that span he did record two pass break ups and 14 tackles. He also showed versatility, as he lined up in the box, at free safety, and 55 in the slot.

Now even though those numbers are good he still allowed a high NFL passer rating of 106.4. But I believe with more playing time and the caches that are in Tampa he can continue to improve.

Final Thought

The Buccaneers will need to bolster the depth in the secondary. Bringing in a young player with versatility can go a long way. Now he may not start but could be a solid addition to cycle in when players need to come out. With Ryan Neal and Dee Delaney set to be free agents he may also feed the teams need and will come in at a very team friendly contract.
