Buccaneers 2023 quarterback Baker Mayfield will be a free agent in March when the NFL’s free agency period begins. Reports are the Pewter Pirates and Mayfield have mutual interest in keeping the 28 year-old quarterback in Tampa.
This notion is further bolstered when Mayfield confirmed Saturday that the team did in fact ask for his input during the offensive coordinator hiring process. Something Mayfield had never experienced before.
“Do I know them? Do I have any interaction? What are my thoughts on that?”
The Bucs ended up hiring former Rams and Kentucky Wildcats assistant Liam Coen
Mayfield worked with Coen during his time with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022. So it’s safe to assume Baker signed off on the hiring. That or this team and Mayfield have amazing poker faces.
Mayfield has repeatedly stated his wanting to stay in Tampa. And now it’s looking like that may be the case.
So what would a Mayfield contract look like? Spotrac put forward a player comparison by contract to the Daniel jones four year $160 million dollar contract and the Derek Carr four year $150 million dollar contract. Placing them in the $37-$40 million dollar range per season. This may seem high to some, but Bucs general manager Jason Licht and his team are salary cap savvy. Look for the deal to be closer to a three-year $80 million dollar deal with a club option fourth-year. And of course plenty of incentives and void-able years. Licht wouldn’t have it any other way.
Mayfield’s 2023 Stats
Yards: 4,044
Completion %: 64.3
Touchdowns: 28
Interceptions: 10
