Report: Winston’s $20.9M Option Won’t Impact If He Starts Again This Season

It was initially reported by HC Dirk Koetter earlier this week that backup Ryan Fitzpatrick would start over the embattled Jameis Winston. A report now comes out via ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Winston’s 5th year option won’t impact his starting/backup status for the remainder of the season. His 5th year option is worth $20.9M, but is only guaranteed if he’s injured.

If Ryan Fitzpatrick keeps up his recent performances that led the Bucs to a hot 2-0 start, and nearly won a game last week that seemed far out of reach, Winston could be iced for the remainder of the season. Which may be the smart move for the Bucs, so they don’t risk a $20.9M injury.

Without a doubt Winston has had a rocky start to his season, but has added great value and still has tremendous upside. That said, it makes sense for the team to ride the hot hand in Fitzpatrick until his magic runs out. As this team is still very much in the playoff hunt.

The Bucs obviously see value in Winston since he survived the trade deadline. The long game may be that they will attempt to rework his option into a new team friendly and/or prove it deal to lock him up for the near future. For now though he rides the bench.
