The cat is out of the bag, Jamel Dean and Sean Murphy-Bunting are two huge liabilities for this Buccaneers defense. I’m not sure what happened from the 2019 to 2020, but Jamel Dean and Murphy-Bunting have regressed tremendously.
Two Heading In The Wrong Direction
At the end of the 2019 season I had Dean’s ceiling as one of the highest on the roster. There were also many that argued Murphy-Bunting would ultimately be the Buccaneers’ best cover corner.
Fast forward to 2020 and all this hype for these two players couldn’t have been further from the truth. Turns out Tampa Bay’s best cover corner all along has been Carlton Davis III, it’s not even close with the rest. Davis is by far the best and most reliable player in this entire secondary not named Winfield JR.
Just watching Dean in 2020 has been a horror ride. Week in and week out Todd Bowles trots this kid on the field for further embarrassment. I mean Jamel Dean literally plays like he’s blind to what’s going on on the field around him.
McVay The Almighty
What Sean McVay did to the Buccaneers secondary on Monday Night Football should be downright illegal. The Rams came out and bullied the Buccaneers secondary in embarrassing fashion, on a national stage. The Buccaneers made Cooper Kupp look like Jerry Rice reincarnated. I mean this guy had like six catches in the first four minutes of the game!!!
Kupp finished the game catching 11/13 passes for 145 yards, in doing so he averaged 13.2 yards per catch. Robert Woods finished with 12/15 catches for 130 averaging 10.8 yards per catch with 1 touchdown. Yes we can sit here and blame Todd Bowles zone defense but at the end of the day either a player is going to have some dog in him or not.
Costly Corners
There is no way any player with any amount of fight in him will let a wide receiver do what Kupp and Woods did Monday. They lined up play after play and physically dominated both Bucs’ corners.
Dean and Murphy-Bunting are costing this defense big time and there’s nobody on the depth chart to replace them.
The Buccaneers have the Chiefs coming up Sunday you don’t think Patrick Mahomes is watching film licking his chops? Mahomes knows he just has to target whoever Dean and Murphy-Bunting are covering.
This Buccaneers defense needs to figure something out and quick. Iif you think the Buccaneers made an average Jared Goff look Hall of Fame worthy wait until Andy Reid comes to town with the former MVP!!!
