The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ quarterback competition is tightening up according to offensive coordinator Dave Canales. The question is, is the competition tightening up because Kyle Trask is showing improvement or is Baker Mayfield faltering?
According to Mayfield, it’s the latter.
“The two practices [prior to today] were not my best by any means,” Mayfield stated Thursday, via JoeBucsFan.com. “We looked at it; footwork was a little off. Just being out of rhythm. Just getting back to that, it was a lot better for me today. . . . Today was better than the previous two.”
Mayfield’s resume eludes to him being more than capable of leading the Buccaneers offense. But by his own admission he hasn’t played up to that in recent practices. Mayfield does see some positives from this competition.
“It’s great for everybody, to be honest with you,” Mayfield stated. “When the quarterback room is having success, it shows what this offense can be capable of.”
The competition marches on as the team is now just a week away from their first preseason game. Stay tuned.
