Tampa’s free agency acquisitions didn’t stop with Sweezy and Martin, they continued with Brent Grimes, and Robert Ayers. The veteran defensive end signed a three-year $21 million deal with $10.5 million guaranteed. Ayers pulled off a career-high 9.5 sacks last season with the New York Giants. Hopefully, the addition of the DE will help bring Tampa out of the low pass rush ranking of 26th. Buccanneers Gm Jason Licht Stated that Ayers is a versatile pass rusher who can play a variety of positions along the defensive line, and has been successful both from the interior as well as the edge, he is an ideal fit for our 4-3 defensive system. Licht went on to mention that not only will Ayers bring consistent pressure, and disruption to the opponent’s passing game, he will bring veteran leadership to the line.
