Buccaneers’ Gholston, “Coach Bowles is One of the Coaches That I Would Run Through the Wall For”

The notion that Buccaneers’ head coach Todd Bowles might be on the hot-seat isn’t really new. From the underachieving 8-10 season in 2022 back to the all-out blitz call against the Rams. By the way, how does one get a raise and promotion after that all-out blitz call? But I digress.

To be fair, Bowles also was the one who constructed the gameplan that shut down Mahomes and the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Then last season the Buccaneers finished 7th in sacks, without the services of Shaq Barrett for a good portion of the season.

These are all opinions of talking heads and fans alike, but what about the players? The guys who Bowles actually leads? Enter defensive tackle Will Gholston. Gholston was recently on WDAE where he spoke about the respect Bowles has in the locker room.

“Coach Bowles is one of the coaches that I would run through the wall for knowing that the wall won’t fall down. And if he said, ‘Do it again.’ I would do it again,” Gholston stated. “Because you can see in his preparation and detail, especially being a defensive coordinator, like you see his work ethic. Like I know his work ethic and it only drives me to work as hard or harder as a player because I know the vision and I’ve seen the success.”

It’s not uncommon for players to have their coaches back. Yes, Bowles has had some head-scratching moments, but he’s had moments of brilliance as well. If Gholston’s comments are a reflection of the entire locker rooms beliefs, then this team is going to be fine. If not, well, buckle-up, it’s going to be a rocky season.
